The Raintree Lane Road subdivision in the town of Harmony, in Upshur County was ravaged by a massive fire that destroyed at least 12 homes and forced the evacuation of its residents.
Multiple fire departments fought the flames.
Work went late into the night as the neighborhood became an ash strewn wasteland.
East Texas continues to deal with a record setting drought that has sparked multiple wildfires throughout the area.
East Texas has been suffering a record breaking drought the Summer of 2011. This and record high temperatures has combined to create a recipe for disaster. Smith County and the surrounding area has been dealing with eight consecutive days of wildfires, pushing fire fighting resources to the limit. Many of these fires are happening on remote forest areas accessible only through rough terrain or oil company roads.
